Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi, CEO, HSBC Qatar, tells Aparajita Mukherjee why the bank choose Mubarak Ali Malik, Qatari artist to celebrate this momentous occasion of the Bank. “Mubarak Al Malik’s unique ability to tell a story with his art is one of the key reasons why we chose him. We were confident that he would be able to paint a picture of Qatar’s history, family values, iconic buildings and modernisation to capture the past, present and future.” Mostafawi adds that Malik being a versatile artist, renowned for his involvement in the city’s graffiti art, with his artistic talents extending to sculpture and fine arts, allowing him to explore various aesthetics, “his work combines Arabic culture and traditional materials with a modern twist, preserving an authentic essence in his creations, while managing to keep an authentic feel to his work while mixing it up with modern elements”.
Mubarak Al Malik, Qatari artist, on the inspiration that led him to creating the artwork commemorating 70 years of HSBC in Qatar: “In this artwork I tried to combine the present and the past from one side and the most important pillars of Qatar Vision 2030 on the other hand. I used some of the flamboyant landmarks in Qatar such as the exciting design of the Islamic Art Museum, Al Bayt Stadium – one of the iconic World Cup 2022 stadiums. I also focused on the modernisation and urbanisation in Qatar together with some cultural symbols of the country, such as the sea pearl. The Qatari family – between present and past – was also depicted with the use of advanced technologies along with the Arabic coffee which represents our warmth, generosity, and hospitality.”
Known for street graffiti art, Mubarak Al Malik thinks that this project “is an important addition to my profile and artistic career”.
“Today, street art has achieved wide popularity across the world and is no longer confined to hidden spaces. Increasing entities are now looking to cooperate with street artists, as people enjoy art anywhere (walls, tunnels, bridges) not only inside galleries and halls. I hope that the installation of this piece in Msheireb would attract people and be an inspiration for future generations.”
The artwork is on display at Msheireb for a month until first week of April
